TikTok is different from other social media applications in many ways and I don’t just mean in its format and content. The whole structure of the company differs from other social media apps such as Twitter and FaceBook. Whereas these older channels started off and grew organically, TikTok, or rather ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, used every trick up its sleeve to facilitate rapid growth. ByteDance is one of the world leaders in Artificial Intelligence, or AI and its founder, Zhang Yiming is regarded as somewhat of a genius when it comes to using AI for harnessing user data to its most effectiveness.
Whereas FaceBook,Twitter, Instagram etc. rely heavily on likes and suggestions that get posted by friends, the AI used in TikTok picks up on everything that the user clicks on and it learns directly from the user, so fast that it’s almost as if it can read your mind. What made FaceBook so revolutionary, was that it taped into the social network of its users and found a way to build a profile of the user in that way. TikTok uses AI to go directly to you, the end user, resulting in a better summary of your likes and dislikes.
It is a far more aggressive approach and this can be seen in other aspects of the company too. The advertising budget of ByteDance seems to be limitless. Just in the last year alone the company spent almost a Billion $ on advertising, that is close to $3 Million a day, proving that they will stop at nothing when it comes to promoting the growth of TikTok. The phenomenal growth of TikTok is not showing signs of slowing down, on the contrary, ByteDance has already hired executives away from FaceBook and has its eyes set on growing TikTok amongst older generations too. If they succeed in this, and there is no reason to believe that they won’t, then there is no way to predict where it will end.
Considering that an older generation will bring with it more opportunities for wider advertising the subsequent growth will be fed from more than one fountain, creating the kind of muscle building steroids that would potentially turn TikTok into an application of gigantic proportions.
As long as ByteDance and TikTok remain innovative and manage to continually evolve with its audience it should be able to keep on growing. Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool to have in your armoury, but one must not lose sight that its content is generated by its users and it is this very content that has brought all of its users to the platform to start with. It is its users that is the most valuable asset of TikTok, all the other admittedly very clever technology can only serve to manage this resource.
The biggest danger for any company is to grow so big as not to realize the value and importance of its users and clients. Keeping the TikTok Community happy and thriving would ensure that it won’t stagnate and it will continue to grow organically.
Realistically though, one should expect that a plateau will at some stage be reached where the growth will slow down and level out. This is the nature of all things and a saturation point must be reached, but if TikTok is even close to such a stage is as yet not possible to say, I have my doubts.
The more other social media platforms complain and predict the eminent downfall of TikTok, the less lightly it is that TikTok will cease to exist. They are simply adding to the already enormous advertising budget that ByteDance has available.
